2 month checkup

[ty]

Hudson had to get two month shots yesterday :(

To immunize or to not immunize - always a debate. We talked about it several times before we went in with him, and the pros for getting Hudson immunized seemed to outweigh the cons. I think the final decision was made when our friend's young child caught one of the diseases that Hudson would be protected from - it sort of just went to show that it really is possible to get sick with one of these things, and what if it was something horrible like meningitis? I'm not 100% at peace with the decision yet, but maybe that will come?

We took him just down the street to Dr. Rajani at the Manitoba clinic. Hudson was such a brave boy. After the first shot he started crying, then after the second shot he started really crying. The poor little guy... I felt very very bad for my son because I knew that he was in the most amount of pain he's ever experienced (thankfully up to this point we have never dropped him so I guess the whole experience of pain is new to him). At the same time there is still something very precious about your little baby absolutely wailing with every possible decibel that they can muster out of their little lungs (sorry Hudson).

When we got Hudson back into his clothes in the awkward little change room for children (more of a deli counter for babies) and then back to the waiting room, Stefanie went to make Hudson's next appointment while I sat down in one of the chairs trying to console my screaming little buddy. The waiting room at our pediatrician's office is very large with many chairs (there are about ten doctors that share the same waiting room) so there were empty seats all around me which made it surprising to me that a little boy came to sit right beside me while Hudson was crying. He was about 6 years old, and at first he sat very quietly but then after about a minute he asked "why is he crying?". I told the boy that he just had to get two needles, one in each leg and the boy said "oh... that must have hurt." He was a very sweet boy. Then afterwards Hudson started to calm down a little bit and I said to the boy that he made him feel better to which the boy said "that's because I love babies!"

At the moment we left the office Hudson stopped crying. I suppose he realized that while it was perfectly normal to be screaming in the waiting room of a clinic, now we were back out in public and he didn't want to cause a scene. I couldn't believe that this was pretty much the end of Hudson fussing about his shots (aside from a few whimpers here and there). It seems like he has a really good pain tolerance. I've thought this ever since he was a newborn when he would be laying on my chest but insisting on using every ounce of his strength to push his head away in a determined attempt to check out what was going on in the rest of the room,  but then when his neck got tired and gave way and his little face went smashing into my collar bone he didn't really seem to mind at all. A few times I even checked to see if his nose was smashed into pieces (he would hit pretty hard).

Anyway, thank you Lord for keeping our boy safe and for making him the best little guy we could have ever asked for.

I also wanted to mention that Hudson has gained over 4 pounds in the past 6 weeks! And two inches! What a little chunk!

  1. Yay for growing babies, new friends being made in the office, and for the cuteness that is Hudson!

  2. Just wanted to encourge you guys... we went in for Danielle's second round of shots the other day, and while the two month ones were awful and consisted of about the same amount of screaming that you decribed with Hudson, this time around she cried for maybe 7 seconds with the first shot and perhaps 10 seconds with the second one. Hopefully the next round for you guys will be easier too! Keep up the blog, I love reading about your little guy!
