Yesterday was my first official day "on my own" with my two rascals. Go on. Marry a teacher too. I dare you.
I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but it turned out better than I thought it would. Mostly everyone was fed. I recall standing at the counter eating a cold fried egg with a bare hand as I held a cranky baby with the other...does that count? No one slept, despite my greatest efforts. But oh well. I managed to fold and put away two heaping loads of laundry, go grocery shopping, and get supper on the table though, so yay me! Highlights? Thought you'd never ask:
-I swaddled Felix and held him while we all went for a walk around the block in our jammies (fresh air usually conks him out pretty quickly). About six houses down from ours we met a wasp. It chased us all the way home. Picture a wild haired and haggard woman in her sweatpants clutching a newborn, and a bare-footed toddler shrieking and running at a full sprint for no reason (let's face it - no one sees that bee)...amusing, no?
-We went to superstore and just after bailing in the cheese aisle, Hudson was running through the bakery section looking behind him, and ran face first into a cake display. His cookie, new tooth brush, and Pinky Pie toothpaste all went flying and he was inconsolable. Felix was also wailing. Awesome.
-Hudson came into the house proudly showing off the bug on his arm. I thought it was a bee so I swatted it off and stomped it to death. Hudson's face welled up and he shrieked, "You just squisheded my best friend!" Oops...
I'm happy to get a new routine going though, despite the challenges! Hudson was extra sweet yesterday - in fact, the first thing he said to me when I stumbled down the hall after a bad night was,"I'll take care of you, mommy."
Another first happened today with Hudson starting preschool!! He's been looking forward to it all summer. I've been trying to tell him that they will be doing more than just playing cars all day, but am unsure if he's getting the message. When I dropped him off, I observed circle time for a few minutes, and let's just say he's among the more "spirited" children of the group :). I had to remind myself that he JUST turned three, and will need time to adjust to a structured environment and consistent interactions with other kids his age - but I'll be sure to reinforce manners and sharing once he's home again! I'm glad he was so excited though, and was happy to kiss me good bye and go explore.
Well, I think we're off to go walk to pick him up (please don't be covered in yogurt, please don't be covered in yogurt...). Now if only Felix would have slept in that time!
Ha! Stef! I laughed out loud reading your posts! I love how you keep it real! So glad you survived the day by yourself! :) <3
ReplyDeleteLol, no one EVER sees the bee... :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like it was a good day, even if you did end up squishing Hudson's new best friend. Keep on keeping on! You're doing great!

omg!!! I could not stop laughing (out loud as well), and then I think to myself if someone was looking in at me they would think im the crazy lady... laughing at no one. I can soooo relate to u, either grabbing the kids and running for hills at a tiny bee, OR leaving them behind to fend for themselves. mother of the year award! lol. I would say it gets easier.... but im still waiting. can't wait for tyler and Hudson to get together again. miss u guys lots, hope to see u soon :)
ReplyDeleteyour cousin jenn.
aww Stef! Wishing I could walk over and help hold the baby so you can eat with a fork, or play outside with Hudson and inform you of friend or foe bugs. I hope that things start to settle down as you start this new routine. I'm here to Skype/vent anytime you need! Love ya, miss ya Sis!
ReplyDeleteAw those superstore moments are hard! Sounds like you took it all in stride though. Hope you get some naptimes in this week! Hudson looks so grown up all ready for preschool.
